Onion Pakodi Recipe
Onion Pakodi is one of the popular south Indian snack recipes. Pakodi and Mirchi Bajji are found in every tea shop as they complement coffee/tea very nicely. During the rainy or winter seasons, you can’t go wrong with onion pokadi as a hot, crunchy, and spicy snack.
There is a wide number of varieties of Pakodi’s or Bajji that can be prepared using gram flour, rice flour, cornflour mixed with vegetables like onions, cabbage, spinach, chilies, potato, and added spices. This flour batter is deep-fried by adding small portions of it.
Onion pakodi is a deep-fried snack where onions are mixed with besan, rice flour and added spices. There are two variations of onion pakodi’s one is soft, crunchy and the other are little hard and crispy.
Today I am sharing you a simple tea time snack Onion Pakodi. This is very easy to make and all-time favorite family snacks. In this rainy season, prepare pakodi, eat and enjoy with your family!

Recipe Steps
- slice onions and slit green chilies
- Mix sliced onions and slit chilies with chili powder, ginger garlic paste, coriander seeds and salt
- Thoroughly mix onions and other spice powders until onions ooze water out.
- To this mixture add the besan, rice flour and mix them slightly to coat the besan on the onions.
- When the oil is hot enough, drop the flour in small portions and fry until golden brown
- Remove from the oil and drain on the paper towel.
- Fry chilies and curry leaves in oil.
- Garnish pakodi with fried curry leaves and chilies.

Onion Pakodi
Ingredients
- 2 big Onions (finely sliced)
- 1/2 cup Besan or chickpea flour
- 2 tbsp Rice flour
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp Ginger garlic paste
- 1/2 tsp Crushed Coriander Seeds (optional)
- 1 or 2 Green chilies
- 1 tsp Salt ( as per your taste)
- Oil for deep frying
- 1 sprig Curry Leaves (optional)
Instructions
- Take sliced onions and green chilies in a plate or wide bowl
- Add chili powder, ginger garlic paste, coriander seeds and salt
- Nicely mix them by squeezing the onions so that the water oozes out.
- Now add the besan, rice flour.
- Mix them slightly to coat the besan on the onions.
- Just add 1tbsp of water and mix the flour.
- When the oil is hot enough, drop the flour in small portions
- Let them fry until they are golden brown by stirring them now and then.
- Remove from the oil and drain on the paper towel.
- Add few chilies and curry leaves to oil and fry till curry leaves are crisp. Garnish pakodi with fried curry leaves and chilies. Serve hot. Kids love to eat with ketchup and adults always like to have with Tea or Coffee.
