HAPPY VINAYAKA CHAVITHI!!!

Vinayaka Chavithi Special Recipes

Kudumulu or Undrallu is the traditional Andhra dish made on the Vinayaka Chavithi festival to offer as prasadam to Lord Ganesh.

Sweet vs Savory:

There are two variations of kudumulu, one is made Savory/Salted and the other variation is made sweet known as bellam kudumulu. Different regions of people make different types of Kudumulu. For the salted variation we use rice rava but for the sweeter version, we use rice flour.

At my home, We usually prepare salted ones. So I am sharing the same with step by step instructions.  I will share the recipe of Bellam kudumulu with you some other time.

Kudumulu

My grandmother used to sing the below song after offering kudumulu or undrallu to Lord Ganesha.

Kudumulu

Oo bojja ganapayya nee bantu ne nayya

undralla taddiki dandu pampu

kammani neyi unu kadu mudhapappu nu bojja

virugaga dinuchu poralu konuchu

Jaya Mangalam Nithya Subha Mangalam !!

Prepare all the Vinayaka chavithi special recipes, offer to Lord Ganesha, pray well, eat well and stay happy:)

How to make Savory Kudumulu or Undrallu :

We can prepare rice rava at home or we can also use the store brought rava. I always prefer to use homemade rava.

How to make Rice rava at home

  • Wash and drain the rice completely.
  • Spread the rice on a cloth and dry them in the sun or under the fan.
  • When the rice is dried completely, transfer them into a dry blender.
  • Pulse them for 2-3 times to make a coarse rava. If you like fine rava, you can pulse them for a few more times but do not over blend as it turns into flour.

Preparation for Kudumulu

  • Take a thick bottomed vessel, add 2 cups of water and tsp of salt.
  • Also, add soaked chana dal, chopped coconut. I love to add coconut which gives chunky texture in every bite. While offering to god you will use freshly broken coconut. Let them boil.
  • Now add rava by stirring continuously without forming any lumps.
  • Cover and cook on a low flame until the water is absorbed and rava is mostly cooked.
  • Turn off the flame, remove the vessel from the stove, and let the mixture cool down.

How to make kudumulu

  • Take a small portion of the mixture and roll them into balls. If the mixture is sticky then make balls by dipping your hands in water.
  • Meanwhile, take a vessel, add water, and place an idli plate. You can also use a pressure cooker without whistle.
  • Arrange all the prepared balls in the idli plate.
  • Steam the balls for 8-10 minutes depending on the size and age of the rice. If the rice is aged, it takes little more time to cook.
  • Cool them completely. Now prasadam is ready to offer to Lord Ganesha.
